Ramond Dong.

Raymond picked up the guitar when he was 8 years old, and he started by learning how to strum and play simple tunes. It was not until he was 10 did he know about classical guitar that he began learning from Lih. For the next 5 years, he learned along with the Suzuki method, learning the pieces and about the community. Raymond then decided to try for grade 8, so he worked on it for the next 3 years and finally achieved it in 2021. Now working towards his ATCL diploma he has been learning to understand and finding out what playing the guitar means to him.Programme.Prelude No. 5 by H.Villa Lobos

Matthew Marshal Concert. 1012 East Coast Rd.,8pm Sat.31st July

image.png

Described as “…a guitarist of superb technical accomplishment and a musician of perception and style” (Dominion Post) Matthew Marshall is one of New Zealand’s leading classical guitarists. In a performing career spanning more than 35 years, Matthew has brought his unique interpretations and original musical personality to over 2000 performances on four continents and from Iceland to Siberia and on to Easter Island! He is passionate about contemporary music, especially by New Zealand composers, and has commissioned or premiered more than 50 solo, chamber, and orchestral works for guitar. His critically acclaimed solo debut in the Royal Festival Hall London featuring the music of New Zealand was described as “…extraordinarily successful” (Musical Opinion UK) and “…a rare opportunity to be introduced to so much new and interesting repertoire all in one concert, which Marshall very successfully built to a joyous finale.” (Classical Guitar Magazine, UK). As a recording artist, Matthew features thirteen albums for solo guitar, chamber groups and with orchestra (alongside the Kronos Quartet, the New Zealand String Quartet, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and others). His third solo album, Rhapsody on a Riff, featuring the music of New Zealand composer Michael Calvert was released worldwide by Ravello Records USA in June 2015. “Rhapsody on a Riff gives you some brilliant contemporary music for guitar as played by a true artist” His fourth solo album Fragments was a finalist in the Best Classical Artist category of the 2020 Aotearoa Music Awards and was named in the top 200 albums of all styles and genres to be released worldwide in 2020 by Los Angeles reviewer Ted Gioia. His latest album Brighter Than Blue, released in 2020, featuring New Zealand chamber music with the guitar was described as “Marshall is superb in accompaniment and subtle when in melodious centre stage” (The Listener). Matthew works across a range of musical styles and genres and as well as performing with the Berlin Chamber Orchestra, the Orlando Philharmonic and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, he has worked with artists such as Dame Kate Harcourt and Sir Jon Trimmer, as well as jazz stars Rodger Fox, Bruce Forman, Paul Dyne, Roger Sellers, Anita Schwabe and Grammy-winner Bill Cunliffe. Matthew has also held senior academic leadership positions including Dean of Arts at Southern Cross University Australia, Dean of Creative Arts at Central Queensland University Australia, Director of Music at Dartington College of Arts UK, CoDirector of the New Zealand School of Music and Head of the Conservatorium of Music, Massey University. He is currently Professor of Music and Head of IDEAschool at the Eastern Institute of Technology, Napier, New Zealand. Gunter Herbig Concert. 1012 East Coast Rd. 8pm Saturday 14th. June.

Gunter Herbig- Classical Guitar

image001
BIO ( SEE ATTACHMENT FOR MORE)
Gunter Herbig was born in Brazil and grew up in Portugal and Germany. Influenced by such different cultures and aesthetic languages, he has developed a highly personal, charismatic, and expressive style of playing and performance. The balance of Brazilian sensuousness, intense Portuguese passion and German intellect and finesse is the hallmark of his playing. Since moving to New Zealand in 1989 he has made numerous national concert tours and has a busy performance schedule which has taken him to South America, Central America, and Europe, where he appears as a soloist and chamber musician in concerts and festivals. He has performed on several live broadcasts on television and radio in New Zealand and Mexico and has recorded for a number of film scores and television documentaries.

He served as the Head of Classical Guitar and Chamber Music at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington and now teaches Guitar at the School of Music at Auckland University but is based in Wellington.

Listen to Gunter’s bestselling CD “Hauturu – Where the Winds Rest” online at

http://www.emusic.com/label/ode-records-Musicadium-MP3-Download/202088.html

In May 2009, Naxos, the world’s largest classical music label released Gunter’s second CD “Prospero Dreaming – New Zealand Guitar Music by Douglas Lilburn and David Farquhar” (Naxos 8.572185) which received a 5-star review from the NZ Herald.

Critics’ voices:

(Hans Hofer, Coburger Tageblatt), January 2006:

“(Gunter Herbig) is an absolute master of his metier; he performed with dreamlike secure virtuosity, from breathed harmonics to fully realised orchestral flights of an entirely explored dynamic scale”

Ricardo from LaGuitare.com (France) about “Hauturu – Where the Winds Rest”, November 2007:

“His playing is incredible, how can you communicate such power with an instrument just made of wood and nylon strings?

…Fabulous, totally and extraordinarily fabulous.”

William Dart, NZ Herald, about “Prospero Dreaming”:

“Gunter Herbig is one of our finest guitarists… The essential character of much of the music on this CD comes from its sounding as if it might have been improvised on the spot. That Herbig has conveyed this impression, with no sacrifice of tonal beauty or structural logic, is a mark of his artistry.” (Five stars)
