GUEST Artist

Cheryl Grice

Cheryl will be talking about phrasing and musicality, working on how to take your musical expression to a whole new level. Just playing the notes, is not playing music, just as ‘just saying the words’ doesn’t necessarily mean you are saying anything. Playing music is like reciting a poem, ‘don’t just mouth the words’ –  ‘say something!’ Please bring your guitars and a pencil and rubber.

Cheryl Grice won a scholarship to the Royal Manchester College of Music at 16yrs, and won 2 International competitions at the age of 19. She studied regularly with John Williams at his house in London, and performed with huge success in a BBC recording of a master class with Julian Bream. Julian was so impressed with her playing that he asked her to join him in Paris later that year where they televised a lesson for French Television. She had appeared on TV and Radio many times, and performed in both the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Wigmore Hall in London. She emigrated to NZ in 97’ with a large family, and returned to International touring this year with a tour of Canada and the UK.

Hard Case Duo(Michelle Birch & Jakub Roznawski)

Michelle Birch.

Michelle  began her guitar studies at the age of 7.

. Her Honours research paper, “Jazz Mind and Classical Hands- Roland Dyens and his style of arranging and performing” is on Wikipedia on Roland Dyens’ page and athttp://www.rolanddyens.com/. The connection made with Mr Dyens during the writing of the paper resulted in a warm mutual regard, and dinner together in Paris in the European winter of 2009.
Primarily Michelle sees musical performance as a way to connect with people, and her collaboration with other guitarists in duo reflects this. In addition to Michelle’s partnership with Jakub, she worked with the Wellington guitarist Julie Bevan for eight years, and the Auckland guitarist Paul McIvor aka “The Owl and the Pussycat” for two.
Michelle holds, in addition to a first class honours degree in performance earned under the tutelage of Gunter Herbig, merit Grade 8 certificates both in solo and duet performance; the duet certificate with Julie. She earned her Certificate in Executant Music in 1984 under the tutelage of Ron Burt.

Michelle and Jakub, aka “The Hard Case Guitar Duo”, have known one another since 2005, when Jakub had dreadlocks and Michelle didn’t. They were at the time both doing their Honours degrees in Performance, and were matched as a duo for some of their performance pieces. The duo was so successful that in 2006, despite living in different cities, they toured the North Island together. Their motivation as a duo is to avoid being serious unless absolutely necessary, and then only under extreme provocation!

An enchanted evening with Bruce Paine

Greetings Everyone,

I would like to bring to your attention my next concert which will be on Saturday November 8th, 7.30pm at the historic house Alberton.  I will be playing a varied programme of solo works by Albeniz, Arcas, Granados, Mozanni, Sor and will include a small selection of my own compositions.

Guests will be offered a complimentary drink on arrival from 7pm until shortly before the concert and some light sweet treats are planned for afterwards. Bookings are essential due to limited space.   If you have questions, or would like to reserve a seat, please contact Alberton, 100 Mt Albert Road, Auckland – tel (09) 846 7367 – email: alberton@heritage.org.nz – hours: Wednesday-Sunday 10.30am – 4.30pm.  Please refer to the coupon below for further details.

To my overseas contacts, as much as I’d love to see you at the concert I do not expect you to travel the many thousands of kilometres it would take to get here!  Instead I would like to invite you and all of my contacts to be among the first to view my latest music video.  The video entitled “The Little Church in the Field” features a performance of my composition “Finchdean”, which I will play on November 8th.

Best wishes,
Bruce
