Bruce Paine – Classical Guitarist

Bruce Paine is Auckland, born and raised, and is one of New Zealand’s foremost classical guitarists, known especially for his strong and sensitive playing, original compositions, and CD releases of his work. He is an alumni of the University of Auckland School of Music, graduating with honours in 1995, and is an auditioned RNZ Concert recording artist. Highlights of his career include selection as a semi-finalist in the 1995 Shell Darwin International Guitar Festival Competition, a 1998 stage appearance in Prague alongside the world famous Czech guitar virtuoso Stepan Rak, and a performance of Joaquin Rodrigo’s ‘Concerto de Aranjuez’ in 2001 with the St Matthews Chamber Orchestra. In 2007, his debut guitar compositions were described by Wellington based guitarist, teacher and radio personality Gunter Herbig, as “a wonderful achievement and a milestone for New Zealand guitar composition.” To date Bruce has written around 40 individual pieces (some making up suites) for classical guitar covering themes as diverse as New Zealand landscape, underwater sea life, songs of Gallipoli and kinetic art sculptures. His compositions, most notably ‘Finchdean’, are now played and performed by student and professional guitarists in New Zealand and abroad. The first recordings of his work by other guitarists were released in 2017 by Rattle Records (‘The Passing of a Black Star’ New Zealand Guitar Quartet RAT- D071) and the German CD label NAXOS (‘Dream Weaving’ Gunter Herbig 8573765). This month both albums have appeared simultaneously on the RNZ concert ‘top ten’ classical charts. In 2015 Bruce was awarded Creative New Zealand grants towards compositions for the New Zealand Guitar Quartet and Canberra based guitarist John Couch. Both works are due to be premiered during the Taranaki Classical Guitar Summer School in January 2018.

CDs and sheet music will also be for sale .

In Winter the Witten-Hannah’s made a concert tour together across the South Island from Invercargill to Wanaka, to Tekapo and finally Christchurch hosted by family’s learning guitar by the Suzuki method with South Island teacher George Hendry.

They are successfully balancing family life with careers both performing and teaching their musical instruments – Guitar and Cello. They have been married for 15 years and now their two children have joined them in concert for the first time this year. Sofia 11 years old on violin/guitar and The 9 years old on cello.

Sasha’s most advanced guitar student Reuben Chung will also play a piece this Sunday.

Maria Elena and students –  A night of Flamenco Guitar and Dance!!!

본문 이미지 1

Maria Elena, founder of Flamenco NZ, has dedicated her life to the Art of Flamenco from a young age, inspired by her guitar playing cousins Anthony and Charles Mandos, Manitas de Plata, the Gypsy Kings, Paco de Lucia and many more. She took guitar lesson with Humberto El Payo, who was a student of Nino Ricardo. Maria came to New Zealand in the eighties with New Zealand artist Darcy Lange, who studied Flamenco with legendary gypsy guitarist Diego del Gastor. Together they performed in many parts of New Zealand as well as in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. One of the works, Aire del Mar, will be recreated and performed in Santander, Spain, in 2018, involving Spanish Flamenco artists. Maria was also a special resident at the Pena Flamenca in Jaen, Andalusia, in 1990, a cultural centre for Flamenco, a place where local Andalusian families get together to sing, dance and play Flamenco. Currently Maria teaches Flamenco guitar and dance at The Auckland Performing Arts Centre and she travels regularly to Spain where she spends time with Flamenco artists. Maria Elena is an accomplished Flamenco guitarist and plays traditional Spanish Flamenco guitar. She will be accompanied in a couple of songs by her students, Campbell He, Andries Meintjes, Agnes Sigley, Celine Buxton and Linda Chalmers.

Sadder note

A long standing member and past president of the CGSA, Chris Marks. Chris passed away on Friday 22nd September at age 77.

Chris had been involved with the Guitar Society since the 1960’s and was president in the late 80’s and early 90’s. He was responsible in organising many guitar related events through this period. Chris will be missed by many of us.

Here is a posting by Bruce Paine on Face book last week:

It’s with sadness that I find myself now posting about the passing of a good friend (he would never allow me to say ‘old’!) and past president of the Classic Guitar Society of Auckland, Chris Marks. Chris ran the society from the late 1980s and early 1990s (his extraordinary head for details of events would have instantly narrowed that down to the precise dates and possibly even the times of day as well!) and his ability to present meetings efficiently gave the guitar society the impression of being professionally run. Chris was a wonderful, well mannered man who contributed far more for the guitar society than most people ever realised. They were exciting times, in the days when local players felt starved of concerts by international guitarists, few and far between. Chris helped create opportunities for young guitarists, such as myself at the time, to hear the work of visiting professional guitarists from the UK, Europe and South America and to participate in masterclasses. As well as one-off concerts and two-day ‘festival’ events, Chris helped organise a special tribute to guitar maker Louis Panormo, with a performance by UK guitarist John Mills and his duo partner Cobie Smit in rural Awhitu with TV news coverage of the event. There were also Auckland Summer Schools and perhaps the most memorable was held at Howick’s Fowey Lodge with visiting Icelandic guitarist Pétur Jonasson who wowed everyone with his exciting concerts featuring a world of music new and inspirational to all of us. It was through meeting and playing for Pétur that I began considering studying music and guitar at university level. It’s safe to say that without such opportunities brought about by Chris, I would not be doing what I do today.

Duo Jackson….Guitar and Violin. 1012 East Coast Rd., Sat. 16th Sept.

본문 이미지 1

In September this year Duo Jackson will be giving concerts throughout the North Island. they will present an exciting, colourful and varied performance . The programme will include Classical works such as three Spanish Dances by Granados, Tangos by Argentine Composer Astor Piazzolla , Jazz, Gypsy, solo Flamenco Guitar and a new original composition, Titled .La Loba. Other tours this year have taken the Duo to Westland and to Singapore.

MARGARET began her violin studies at the age of seven in Dunedin. In 1972 she was accepted to study with Glynne Adams at Auckland University. Further study continued with the great Czech teacher Jan Sedivka at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, resulting in invitations to tour in Australia. Margaret has a natural ability to convey the subtleties and virtuosity of the classics, to captivate the soul with Gypsy music and to improvise with natural creative flair in Jazz idioms. Four years of advanced and intensive study at Canterbury University under Polish Master Jan Tawroszewicz have resulted in an impressive technique and profound musical sensitivity.

MILES began his musical training on the violin, changing to classical guitar in 1965. He has studied with a number of distinguished teachers and several periods in Spain have allowed him to explore and develop Flamenco techniques. An intense period of study with world-renowned Czech guitarist Vladimir

Mikulka took place in the summer of 1982. This was followed with three years of study with the English master guitarist John Mills, which has provided Miles with a technical facility and musicianship of the highest standard. DUO JACKSON Are unique: Classical guitar and violin are an unusual combination of strings. The diverse range of music styles featured in the duo’s repertoire; Classical, Jazz, Latin, Flamenco, Gypsy, original compositions and the authenticity of their performance, creates a unique musical flavour and style. Margaret and Miles have performed in many countries and extensively throughout Australasia. They have made a number of programmes for radio and television and have made many recordings. Over forty Five years of performance and life together have formed a rapport, which is enchanting to experience. Margaret and Miles live in Nelson and both teach at the Nelson School of Music. Their own compositions which have a very original style, usually feature in their performances and have been extremely well received. They have given special performances for the New Zealand Embassies in Singapore and Spain and their last international tour was in 2015 with concerts in Singapore, France, Spain and Italy.   www.duojackson.com
