duo vela |ˈvālə|
plural form of VELUM: of Latin origin, meaning sails.
With a ship and the stars to guide, let Duo Vela transport you across the ocean to other lands.
Experience new sounds and indulge your senses in the colors and picturesque scenes painted by the flute and guitar.
Duo Vela performs enchanting music from across the seas, giving audiences a taste of the sounds, rhythms and cultures of different lands. Their programs range from sultry, rhythmic and daring tango music from Argentina, to soaring, colorful and evocative music from Australia.
Duo Vela has brought their exciting programs to venues across the United States east coast, including the Eastman School of Music, George Eastman Museum, Robin Hixon Theatre, Avaloch Farm and on both WXXI’s Backstage Pass with Julia Figueras and WRUR’s Open Tunings with Scott Regan.
This summer, Duo Vela will be venturing across the seas, performing around twenty-five concerts in China, Australia and New Zealand. Concluding this they will perform at the National Flute Association (NFA) Convention in San Diego, one of the world’s largest flute events. Duo Vela has commissioned leading US composer John Anthony Lennon to write a substantial work for flute and guitar, which will be completed in 2017-18.
